'Made an expensive mistake': Delhi entrepreneur shares difference between front load and top load detergent

A social media post by Delhi-based entrepreneur Ramanuj Mukherjee has prompted discussion about the technical differences between detergents formulated for top-load and front-load washing machines.

Sharing his experience on X, formerly known as Twitter, Mukherjee said he had previously assumed that the distinction between the two types of detergents was largely a branding exercise.

“I used to think top-load detergent and front-load detergent must be the same thing and must be a marketing gimmick. It's just detergent what can be different?” he wrote.

He added: “Boy was I wrong.” Mukherjee went on to describe the issue as more than a labelling difference. “It's a fundamental misunderstanding of systems engineering. It's not about detergent, it's about water. And friction.”

According to his explanation, the variation lies in the design of washing machines themselves. Front-load machines, also referred to as high-efficiency (HE) models, operate with significantly lower water usage and rely on a tumbling motion rather than central agitation. He noted that such machines can use roughly 70 per cent less water than conventional top-loading models.

Because of the reduced water volume, he said, front-load machines require detergents that produce fewer suds. Using standard detergent in these machines can result in what he described as: “Suds overload. Massive foam.”

He explained that excessive foam can create a cushioning effect between garments, reducing the friction required for effective cleaning. In addition, he wrote that too many suds may trigger repeated rinse cycles, leading to increased water and electricity consumption. He also cautioned that persistent foam pressure could affect internal components such as seals and bearings, potentially resulting in early wear and costly repairs.

By contrast, he described traditional top-loading machines with agitators as operating with a larger volume of water, where suds help keep dirt suspended during the wash cycle.

Summarising his view, Mukherjee wrote: “Your detergent isn't just a cleaning agent; it's a precisely tuned input for a specific mechanical system.” He concluded by acknowledging: “I made an expensive mistake.”

The post generated a range of responses from users offering both agreement and scepticism.

One user questioned the technical framing, writing: “I don’t know how did you come to this idea on the role of detergent in Top/Front loading WM. My basic idea has been all that matters is ‘surface tension’ of liquid which detergents increase many fold to isolate darts.”

Another admitted unfamiliarity with the distinction, stating: “Lol! Simply was not aware of all this. I thought detergent is detergent.”

A different user commented: “I always wondered why both are different, never cared to follow up and investigate. Thanks for explaining.”

Some responses took a lighter tone. One person wrote: “Raat ko baalti mein kapde dubaake rakne ke liye, front load ki top load use kare (For soaking clothes overnight in a bucket, should we use front-load detergent or top-load?).”

Another user suggested partial interchangeability, commenting: “Using front-load detergent in top load is ok (increase quantity), but not the other way around.”

Meanwhile, one participant argued that with the availability of liquid detergents marketed as suitable for multiple machine types, the distinction may not be critical. According to this view, the detergent performs the cleaning function, while the washing machine’s role is limited to washing, rinsing and drying.
