Google Pixel 8 series wins best smartphone at the Mobile World Congress 2024

Google Pixel 8 Series won the ‘Best Smartphone’ award, beating phones like the Apple iPhone 15 series and the OnePlus Open. Google was recognised for its “outstanding performance, innovation and leadership,” according to the GSMA.

Google’s Pixel 8 series staved off some heavy competition from the likes of Apple, Samsung and OnePlus to win big at the Global Mobile Awards (GLOMO). These awards are one of the highlights of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 that just concluded in Barcelona.

The Pixel 8 Series won the coveted ‘Best Smartphone’ award despite big names in the fray like the Apple iPhone 15 series and the OnePlus Open. Google was recognised for its “outstanding performance, innovation and leadership,” according to the GSMA, the organisation behind the GLOMO awards. It also marks another big step for generative AI in the smartphone space. Google’s Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are betting big on their AI capabilities.

Google breaks Apple’s streak of sorts. The Apple iPhone 14 Pro was last year’s winner while the iPhone 13 Pro Max won the same award in 2022. Meanwhile, Qualcomm took home the ‘Breakthrough Device Innovation’ award for its new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. According to the jury, Qualcomm deserved recognition for “core hardware and software innovation within smartphone devices themselves.”

The Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro came with key improvements over their predecessors. Both devices are powered by Google’s all-new Google Tensor G3 chip. Google has also bumped up the displays of both smartphones. The Pixel 8 and 8 Pro feature Actua and Super Actua displays respectively with enhanced screen brightness.
