An Indian stray dog named Aloka has drawn widespread attention online after accompanying a group of Buddhist monks on a 3,700-kilometre peace walk across the United States. The journey, which covers 10 US states, formed part of the “Walk for Peace”, a long-distance march intended to promote compassion, loving kindness and non-violence.

The monks encountered Aloka during an earlier peace walk in India, where the dog began following them and remained with the group for more than 100 days. The bond formed during that period continued beyond national borders, with Aloka later joining the monks on their US journey.

According to information shared on a Facebook page dedicated to the walk, Aloka was estimated to be around four years old and was believed to be an Indian Pariah dog. His exact breed and birth date remained unknown.

“His journey is truly special, he was once a stray wandering in India who began following the Venerable Monks. He walked with them for over 100 days across India, very much like the #WalkForPeace we are on today! Though his exact birthday remains a mystery, his loyalty and peaceful spirit are clear to everyone he meets,” the page stated.

The Walk for Peace was organised by the Huong Dao Vipassana Bhavana Center and began in Fort Worth, Texas, on October 10 last year. A total of 19 monks participated in the march, which is scheduled to conclude in Washington, DC, in February after approximately 110 to 120 days on the road. The route spans roughly 3,700 kilometres, with the group passing through multiple states including South Carolina, where they will in McCormick during the later stages of the journey, according to reports.

The organisers said the purpose of the walk was to spread “awareness of peace, loving kindness, and compassion across America and the world”. Progress along the route was documented through social media updates and a live tracking map.

Aloka emerged as an unofficial mascot of the march, regularly appearing in photographs and videos walking calmly alongside the monks. The dog receives routine veterinary check-ups during the journey and is frequently greeted by supporters who offer him food and treats.

Aloka has also gained a substantial following online. His Instagram account has crossed 1.6 lakh followers, with regular posts documenting the journey. One post read: “Yesterday was so beautiful! Aloka looked very stylish in his green coat as he led the way through the thick morning fog. Leading the venerable monks through the mist, Aloka was the perfect guide, focused and calm every step of the way. May you and all beings be well, happy and at peace.”

As images and videos of the dog accompanying the monks circulated widely, social media users shared emotional responses to the story.

“I looked up the meaning of Aloka in Sanskrit- it means a walking light. A perfect name,” one user commented.

Another wrote: “Aloka, a beacon of light.”

A third said: “Aloka is curing my seasonal depression. But seriously, he carries such a wonderful, calm energy, just like his venerable brothers.”

A further comment read: “Aloka is a beautiful soul. As well as each monk. This is such a beautiful movement. My heart is filled with love. May peace be with all.”
