‘I thought Dubai was safe’: Founder says explosion struck 10 km from home amid Iran–Israel strikes

Posts from Dubai and neighbouring countries triggered panic online, prompting advisories for Indian nationals to stay cautious and avoid unnecessary travel.

Founder says explosion occurred 10 km away in Dubai amid regional strikes.

Amid a sharp escalation in tensions between the US, Israel and Iran, unverified reports on social media claimed that loud blasts were heard in parts of the Gulf, including Dubai, Bahrain and Qatar, regions which are home to a large Indian diaspora. The claims triggered widespread anxiety online, with several users expressing disbelief that cities long considered among the safest in the Middle East could be impacted by the fallout of the conflict.

Adding to the unease, startup founder Arka Datta shared a detailed post on X describing what he experienced in Dubai. He said many, including himself, had believed the emirate to be a “safe haven,” but that perception was shaken after the US attack on Iran and Tehran’s earlier warnings of retaliation against American bases in the Gulf. According to Datta, explosions were heard around 10 km from his home, cab services became unavailable and airspace was shut, prompting him to urge people to stay cautious and closely watch developments.

Other social media users echoed similar concerns. One post said the day’s events alleged explosions, airspace closures and transport disruptions served as a reminder that no Gulf city is immune when tensions between the US and Iran spill over. Another user lamented that they had booked flights and hotels for Dubai for the next day, only to start packing as news of the conflict and reported blasts began circulating.

Embassy alerts Indians in UAE

Against this backdrop, the Indian government issued an advisory for its citizens in the UAE. The Embassy of India, Abu Dhabi, under the Ministry of External Affairs, advised Indian nationals to avoid unnecessary travel, remain vigilant and strictly follow safety guidelines issued by local authorities. The embassy said it continues to function normally and will share updates as required, urging Indians to stay alert and use official helplines in case of emergencies.
