Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has gone viral, not for crypto, but for a hole in his black sock. Social media is amused, not for a groundbreaking innovation or a bold statement, but for a tiny hole in a crypto billionaire’s sock. A photograph of Ethereum co‑founder Vitalik Buterin at the ETH Chiangmai conference in Thailand has quickly gone viral.

The conference, which is reportedly running from January 28 to February 3, captured Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin in a casual moment that instantly went viral. Dressed in a black T-shirt and deep green pants, he appeared entirely unconcerned about his black socks one of which had a noticeable hole. Social media quickly seized on this minor wardrobe mishap, generating jokes and admiration alike.

One user quipped, “Small matters don’t interest him.” Another added, “Not everyone is changed by money.” Others joined in the fun, writing comments like, “It’s an advanced ventilation system for the machine,” and, “Man is allocating 100% of his attention to changing the world; socks are not on the roadmap.”

Another joked, “Half of my net worth is in this man’s hands. Should I be worried?”

One particularly detailed post highlighted the contrast between Buterin’s casual style and the showiness often associated with wealth, “@VitalikButerin spotted at a conference giving a talk in holey socks not a meme not staged just the Ethereum wizard casually shipping the future while half of ct is flexing rented watches and leased supercars for engagement. This guy out here looking like he coded sharding, then walked straight out the house without checking drip and somehow that’s exactly why people trust him. No Rolex, no Lambo, no fake billionaire cosplay just vibes, brains, and socks fighting for their life.”

Vitalik Buterin is the co‑founder of Ethereum, a blockchain platform enabling decentralised applications and smart contracts. He proposed Ethereum in 2013 as a more flexible blockchain than Bitcoin, officially launching it in 2015 alongside several co-founders, including Gavin Wood, Joseph Lubin, Jeffrey Wilcke, Mihai Alisie, Anthony Di Lorio, Amir Chetrit, and Charles Hoskinson.

Vitalik Buterin became the world’s youngest crypto billionaire in 2021 when the value of Ethereum surged, earning him a spot on the Forbes list. As per reports, in 2025, his net worth was estimated at around $760 million, though fluctuations in the cryptocurrency market can affect the value of his holdings.
