A post by an Instagram user has triggered an online discussion after saying people without Rs 5 lakh in savings should cut back on spending. In the video, Priya Yadav listed activities such as shopping, holidays, dates and daily coffee as things to avoid until financial stability is achieved in the bank account.

“You shouldn’t be going shopping. You shouldn’t be going on vacation. You shouldn’t be going on dates. You shouldn’t be buying coffee every day. You shouldn’t be binge-watching Netflix like life is already sorted. You haven’t earned that comfort yet,” she said in the video.

Yadav highlights that 2026 makes learning and earning more accessible than ever. She added that excuses about income often reflect a preference for ease over effort.  “Never in history has it been this easy to learn and earn money,” she said, adding that when people say they do not know how to earn more, they may simply be choosing comfort over growth.

While admitting that people have personal challenges, she said that healing should not stop financial growth. She said those who seek freedom must also accept responsibility. “If you want freedom, you have to accept responsibility,” Yadav said.

“So if you don't have at least 5 lakhs saved, I'm sorry, but this phase is not about romanticising your life. Your only job should be to cut distractions, build skills, increase your income, save aggressively, and invest consistently,” she further says.

“Your only job is to cut distractions, build skills, increase income, save aggressively and invest consistently,” her Instagram caption reads.

The video drew mixed reactions, with some users supporting her call for financial discipline, while others criticised the rigid approach to money and lifestyle choices.

One user said, “I should not be eating my meals.”

Another user wrote, “Build skills until when? Never in history the need for skills soared this high.”

A third user added, “Why stop at 5? Why not aim for more and stop eating food?
