Gurgaon creator wears mother's 37-year-old wedding saree at reception: 'Bought it for Rs 900'

Several social media users appreciated the gesture and praised Kumar for honouring her mother on her special day. A few also pointed out that although Rs 900 may feel like a small amount now, especially for a wedding saree, it would have been quite expensive when it was bought in 1989.

A Gurgaon-based YouTuber and content creator has been winning hearts on social media after she wore her mother's 37-year-old wedding saree at her own reception in Delhi. She shared pictures of both her and her mother in the same saree and said that it was bought for Rs 900.

Sejal Kumar, who has more than eight lakh followers on Instagram, got married in December, shared the pictures on Wednesday and wrote: "Wore my mom’s wedding saree for our Delhi reception! This is 37 years old, and she bought it for Rs 900 back then!"

Several social media users appreciated the gesture and praised Kumar for honouring her mother on her special day.

"The saree is so lovely... awestruck to see such sarees blending in the culture till today! Congratulations!" said one Instagram user, while said, "This is so precious. Aunty looks so pretty and so do you."

A few users pointed out that although Rs 900 may feel like a small amount now, especially for a wedding saree, it would have been quite expensive when it was bought in 1989.

"A saree that cost Rs 900 about 37 years ago would roughly cost Rs 11,000 to Rs 12,000 in 2026 (in today’s value). Average Inflation in India (long term) is around 7 percent per year," a user commented.

In another instance where the bridal trosseau played an exceptionally important role at a wedding, last year, a disagreement over a wedding lehenga eventually led to the cancellation of a marriage in Haryana's Panipat. As the conflict between the families escalated, a relative reportedly drew a sword, prompting others to call the police.

According to reports, the incident happened on February 23 when the groom arrived from Amritsar with his wedding party, only to have the bride’s family object to the lehenga they bought. The bride's family insisted she wear the one they bought from Chandni Chowk in Delhi for Rs 40,000 because they did not like the lehenga offered by the groom's family.
