Ramabhadran Sundaram, Director of Alumni Impact at Teach for India, recently shared the remarkable story of Uthaya Kumar, a former ISRO scientist who transformed his career path from space research to running a successful business. Uthaya’s inspiring journey, which Sundaram detailed in a LinkedIn post, has captivated many as an example of perseverance and innovation.

Hailing from Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu, Uthaya Kumar holds an M.Phil and PhD in Statistics. He began his career at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), where he played a crucial role in monitoring the accuracy of liquid fuel densities used in satellite launches. His work contributed to the safety and success of various ISRO missions over the course of seven years. After leaving ISRO, Kumar transitioned into academia, working as an assistant professor. Yet, despite his accomplishments in both science and education, he sought a new challenge in entrepreneurship.

In 2017, Uthaya Kumar co-founded ST Cabs, a taxi service, with support from friends. The business was named after his parents—Sukumaran and Tulsi—a tribute to his family. What started as a modest venture has now expanded into a fleet of 37 cars, generating an annual revenue of Rs 2 crore. Kumar operates the business alongside his brother, implementing a unique business model that has propelled its growth.

The company’s 70-30 revenue-sharing model ensures that drivers retain 30% of the profits. This arrangement gives drivers a substantial stake in the business’s success, fostering a strong sense of ownership and responsibility. Many drivers have reinvested their earnings into the business, helping to grow the fleet. Additionally, Uthaya Kumar has used his profits to provide housing for migrant employees and support the education of children in his local community.

Reflecting on his interaction with Kumar, Sundaram noted that the former scientist’s leadership and business ethics were motivational. Sundaram’s post emphasised how Uthaya’s story highlighted the value of leadership lessons, resilience, and making a difference beyond the professional realm.
