A French woman living in India has sparked widespread discussion on social media after sharing a post comparing aspects of life in India and France, identifying areas where she believes India performs better. The Instagram post, uploaded by a user named Freldaway, has since gone viral, drawing both praise and debate from online audiences.
Titled ‘France is so behind India on these’, the video outlines what the woman described as three areas where India stood out based on her personal experience of living in the country. In the caption accompanying the post, she wrote: “As a French girl living in India, here are three things I think India does much better than France.”
The woman said the first aspect that struck her was the sense of community she observed in India. Referring to conversations with friends, she noted that India felt far less individualistic than France and that this difference shaped everyday interactions.
“Sense of community – that one is a topic my friends and I talk about a lot,” she wrote in one of her posts. She added that while some people had explained to her that social expectations could feel heavy at times, she did not feel positioned to comment on that experience as an outsider. “As a foreigner I can’t comment on this, because I’ll never be able to experience it like they do,” she said.
She contrasted this with her upbringing in France, describing it as a society that placed greater emphasis on individualism. According to her, living in India offered a feeling of collective support. “It’s so nice to feel like everyone’s got your back, is ready to help you out,” she wrote, adding that she found it touching to see people caring for one another “like one big family”.
In the same post, the woman also commented on India’s geography and climate. While acknowledging that France had access to natural outdoor environments, she said India offered a far wider range of landscapes.
“It’s such a vast country,” she wrote, adding that India was home to deserts, mountains, coastlines, jungles and backwaters. According to her, this diversity meant that almost any type of climate or environment could be found within the country.
The third area she highlighted was India’s textile industry. She said she was repeatedly struck by the craftsmanship involved in clothing production, particularly embroidery and beadwork.
“Textiles – the amount of care and effort put into the embroidery/bead sewing keeps BLOWING MY MIND!!!” she wrote. She added that garments such as kurtis, which many of her Indian friends considered everyday wear, appeared premium to her. In France, she said, similar fabrics were typically associated with high-end or expensive fashion.
The post quickly gained traction, with users responding positively to her observations. Several people thanked her for highlighting what they described as the positive aspects of Indian society. One user commented: “It’s so nice to hear something lovely being said about my wonderful country India. Thank you.”
Others used the discussion to reflect on global trade and pricing. Referring to the proposed India–Europe free trade agreement, one user wrote: “Don’t worry, ma’am. Upon ratification of the India–Europe FTA, Indian textiles will be cheaper in France.”
"Great that you like these things about our country. You've got a mature cross-culture understanding-hope you do have a good time here," a user added.
The woman later shared additional posts praising other aspects of life in India, including street food, jewellery and hospitality. She also compared long-distance travel options, stating that she preferred India’s sleeper air-conditioned night buses over Flixbus services in France.
“Don’t get me wrong, I love Flixbus in France,” she wrote, “but they are definitely not as comfy as those sleeper AC buses.” She added that India’s connectivity made bus travel a practical alternative to flying and allowed passengers to view landscapes along the way.
She also described street food as an engaging experience, not only because of affordability and flavour but also due to opportunities to interact with local residents and observe daily life.
