Hollywood bids farewell to a comedic legend as Richard Lewis, the renowned stand-up comedian and beloved star of "Curb Your Enthusiasm," passed away at the age of 76 in his home on Tuesday night. His publicist, Jeff Abraham, confirmed that Lewis died of a heart attack.
Lewis, recognized for his self-deprecating humour, ascended to fame in the 1980s. Last April, he disclosed his battle with Parkinson's disease, coupled with the decision to retire from stand-up comedy.
The actor's contribution to "Curb Your Enthusiasm," where he portrayed a semi-fictionalized version of himself alongside Larry David, showcased his comedic brilliance.
Larry David, his long-time friend and co-star, shared a heartfelt sentiment, describing Lewis as a brother.
"Richard and I were born three days apart in the same hospital and for most of my life he's been like a brother to me," he said. "He had that rare combination of being the funniest person and also the sweetest. But today he made me sob and for that I'll never forgive him,” David, the co-creator of “Seinfeld” said.
HBO, expressing grief, acknowledged Lewis's unparalleled wit and talent, emphasizing the irreplaceable void left by his departure.
Joyce Lapinsky, Lewis's wife, expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love and requested privacy during this challenging time.
Born in Brooklyn and raised in New Jersey, Lewis gained prominence in the 1970s, captivating audiences with his neurotic and hypochondriacal comedy. Nicknamed "The Prince of Pain," his edgy act resonated with late-night legends like David Letterman and Jay Leno.
Lewis, known for his openness about addiction and depression, had maintained sobriety for decades. Comedy Central recognized him among the top 50 stand-up comedians, while GQ Magazine included him in the list of the 20th Century's Most Influential Humorists.
His absence during Season 11 of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" was due to a series of surgeries, which he shared with fans.
“Curb Your Enthusiasm” is streaming its last season on HBO.
