An engineer in New York quit her high-salary corporate job because it left her with no time to spend with loved ones. Luisa Zhou planned her exit, and for two years, she worked on a side hustle before eventually launching it as a business when she finally quit the corporate world. Now, the 36-year-old engineering graduate from Princeton University is officially a millionaire entrepreneur who works only four hours a day.
Luisa began her career in analytics at a financial services firm, following the path her parents had encouraged — good grades, a good college, and a stable job. While the role offered security, she found the work unfulfilling and rigid. “It was what I’d been raised to do, but it wasn’t a good fit,” she told Business Insider.
Her perspective shifted in her early twenties when she joined a startup as a co‑founder, contributing her engineering background to the venture. Although the startup eventually failed, the experience exposed her to fundraising, entrepreneurship, and alternative career paths beyond corporate roles.
Family health crisis marked turning point
She later moved to a digital advertising startup, where she earned a six‑figure salary. But, a series of family health crises marked a turning point. Her father underwent heart surgery, her mother was diagnosed with cancer, and her younger sister suffered an eye injury that required long periods of care. Luisa said she quickly ran out of paid time off while supporting her family. “That was the moment I knew I needed something different — something that would let me be there for my family,” she told the publication.
Spent two 'difficult' years building a side business
Rather than quitting outright, Luisa spent two years building a side business alongside her full‑time job, offering coaching, advertising consulting, and related services. The early years were difficult, but the business gained momentum, crossing $1 million in revenue by the time she was 26. Last year, the company brought in over $1.5 million, while requiring fewer working hours than before. By 30, she had accumulated $1 million in investable assets.
Now 36, Luisa works around four hours a day, prioritising time with her husband, parents, and dog. She says stepping away from the traditional time‑for‑money trade‑off was difficult but ultimately worth it, offering both financial stability and control over her time.
