As US President Donald Trump pushed to acquire Greenland, the renewed US focus on the island took an unusual turn. Moving away from diplomatic debates, the White House shared a viral penguin meme, underlining Trump’s long-standing interest in the Arctic territory.
Trump, who has repeatedly spoken about acquiring Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of NATO ally Denmark, has now tapped into an internet viral trend centered around the popular “Nihilist Penguin”.
Who is Nihilist Penguin?
A short clip that has circulated for nearly two decades comes from a scene in Werner Herzog’s 2007 documentary ‘Encounters at the End of the World’. The meme features a solitary Adelie penguin, separating from its colony and heading alone into the Antarctic interior. Over time, the image began to symbolise isolation and misplaced determination, and the footage was widely shared on the internet and later evolved into what is now known as "Nihilist Penguin," "Lonely Penguin," or "Wandering Penguin" meme.

Hopping on the meme culture, the White House posted an AI-generated image depicting Trump walking alongside a penguin towards snow-covered mountains. In the image, the penguin is holding a US flag, the peaks are marked with Greenland’s flag, and the caption says, “Embrace The Penguin.”

Recently, Trump shared an AI image showing himself, Vice President JD Vance, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio standing next to an American flag and a sign declaring Greenland as a US territory. In the image, Trump is shown holding the American flag beside a marker reading: "Greenland - US territory est. 2026."

Trump first prompted the idea of buying Greenland soon after starting his second term as the US President. He recently intensified the tension by threatening a 10% tariff on eight European countries, including Denmark.
