Andaman tourism under scanner after viral post shows roadside litter

A social media post by a photographer alleging worsening waste conditions in the Andaman islands has ignited a debate online, after he shared images and videos purportedly showing heaps of garbage along several roads.

Mohit Mehta took to X to document what he described as the “devastating state” of the islands during a recent visit. Posting visuals from different locations, he claimed that the once-celebrated destination, known for its clear waters and unspoiled beaches, is now grappling with visible litter in public areas.

“Devastating state of Andaman. It’s truly heartbreaking to witness this. Almost every roadside is piled with garbage. I’m visiting after four years, and the condition of the islands this time is deeply disheartening. A place known for its pristine beauty deserves so much better,” he wrote in his caption.

Viral X post receives backlash

The post quickly gained traction, prompting users to share their own experiences and concerns about the changing face of the islands.

One user recalled visiting in 2017 and described it as clean and relatively uncrowded at the time. The person added that recent travellers they spoke to were surprised by that description and reportedly had no plans to return. Another user said they had visited nearly two decades ago and feared that increasing tourist footfall may have taken a toll on the islands’ once-pristine surroundings.

Several comments also turned the spotlight on accountability. One user wrote that responsibility lies not just with authorities but also with citizens, arguing that public behaviour plays a significant role in maintaining cleanliness. Another described the development as “extremely bad news,” claiming the Andaman & Nicobar Islands were regarded as among India’s cleanest destinations about a decade ago, crediting vigilant locals for preserving their beauty.

Others expressed shock, saying they had once been grateful that mass tourism had not yet reached the islands, and questioned why visitors often show little regard for maintaining public spaces.
