Affluent Chinese families are now turning to "professional parents"—specially trained child companions who integrate deeply into their children's lives, addressing their academic, emotional, and daily needs.
These child companions, recruited predominantly from prestigious institutions such as Harvard, Cambridge, Tsinghua, and Peking University, hold advanced degrees and possess a diverse skill set. And they are paid handsomely.
They are not only fluent in multiple languages but also adept in sports and possess a deep understanding of child psychology. Unlike conventional tutors or nannies, these professionals become intimately involved in the daily routines and emotional development of the children they care for.
"The role of a child companion goes far beyond that of a tutor or nanny," explains Song Siyu, a child companion from Chongqing. Her duties, which stretch from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm on weekdays, include helping with homework, engaging in sports, and addressing the child's emotional needs. Her monthly salary ranges between 10,000 to 30,000 yuan (approximately Rs 1.17 lakh to Rs 3.52 lakh).
The rise of this profession is largely driven by the demands of high-net-worth families who prioritise their careers and seek the best for their children, often opting for these professionals over relying on grandparents. A report by CCTV highlights that these child companions are frequently hired directly through social media platforms, bypassing formal agencies and regulatory oversight.
However, the industry is not without its criticisms. The field is predominantly female-driven, with "professional mums" far outnumbering their male counterparts. This gender disparity is rooted in the traditional perception that child-rearing is a maternal responsibility, leaving fewer opportunities for men in the field.
The emotional bonds that can develop between child companions and their charges are another point of concern.
Experts caution against viewing child companions as replacements for genuine parental involvement and stress on the need of their physical presence. A child’s healthy development, both physical and mental, needs the love and support of their parents, experts note.
