A video of a British traveller taking the Delhi Metro for the first time has gone viral on social media. In the clip, he shares his experience of India’s capital city metro system and even compares it with one of the world’s most famous networks, the London Underground.
Rory Porter posted the video on Instagram while travelling on the Blue Line. He spoke about the cleanliness, comfort, and efficiency of the trains, saying that the Delhi Metro might be better than London’s system.
Porter first highlighted the security checks at the station. He had to put his bag through an X-ray machine before entering the platform. He explained that this felt quite similar to airport procedures.
“Okay, just Rs 43 (0.35 pounds) for a half-hour journey. So very, very cheap. Probably one of the cheapest trains or metros I've been on in the world. But these are the trains, the silver ones, the metro ones, look very good, very modern,” he said, pointing at the sleek silver coaches.
While travelling on the Blue Line, Porter noted the cleanliness of the trains and the seating arrangement. “They are very clean indeed. It smells very nice. Lots of seats. Extremely modern...I mean, look at this. It is not very overcrowded either,” he said.
He added, “There are plenty of seats. No one is really standing up. This could be one of the best ones I have been on in the world. Very efficient, lots of stations. Better than London. Very nice, all air-conditioned, very clean, very modern.”
The video drew reactions from social media users. One wrote, “Our metro system is renowned globally! Showcasing vibrant state cultures, modern amenities, and so much more. Encourage your friends and family to visit India. We love to host!”
Another added, “This won't go viral. Videos from Bangladesh railways in which people stand on top go viral in the name of India.”
Others suggested Porter try other metro systems in India. “Try Mumbai underground metro, then tell what is luxurious,” wrote a user, pointing out that Mumbai also has a modern metro network.
The Delhi Metro, which started in 2002, has expanded rapidly and now covers nearly 395 km with 289 stations across Delhi and nearby cities, including Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad. The trains are fully air-conditioned, and stations have security checks to ensure passenger safety.
