A lively discussion has unfolded on X among Bengaluru residents and regulars, with users debating which parts of the city still offer calm, character and a sense of “real Bengaluru” beyond the constant hum of tech parks and start-up culture. The conversation reflects a growing sentiment that India’s tech capital is far more layered than its well-known IT corridors.
The debate was sparked by a post from X user Nilisha Mantri, who argued that Bengaluru’s identity cannot be reduced to areas like Marathahalli, HSR Layout, Bellandur or Whitefield. Describing these neighbourhoods as places “where laptops live,” she pointed instead to older localities such as Jayanagar, JP Nagar, Malleshwaram and Chickpet. According to her, these areas represent the city’s soul, marked by tree-lined streets, the smell of idli and dosa, and the ritual of filter coffee.
Bengaluru isn’t just Marathahalli, HSR, Bellandur or Whitefield. That’s where laptops live. The city lives in Jayanagar, JP Nagar, Malleshwaram, Chickpet where idli-dosa aromas rise, and filter coffee brews around wide old trees🤌— Nilisha Mantri (@nilishamantri_) January 25, 2026
Many users resonated strongly with this view. Some said people who spend most of their time around the Outer Ring Road tech belt rarely experience the cultural heart of the city. Others echoed the idea that South and West Bengaluru, places like Jayanagar 4th Block, VV Puram Food Street, Basavanagudi and JP Nagar offer a sense of calm and community that feels distinctly “Bengaluru.”
However, not everyone agreed. A few users pushed back, arguing that the city’s growth and global identity are closely tied to its tech hubs. One commenter pointed out that without the IT boom, Bengaluru might have remained a quieter tier-2 city, adding that old neighbourhoods and tech corridors have grown together, not in opposition.
As the thread grew, users began listing a wide range of localities—Ulsoor, Frazer Town, VV Puram, KR Market, Mosque Road, Indiranagar, Koramangala, Rajajinagar and Sadashivanagar—each reflecting different phases of the city’s evolution.
