"Developers are the heartbeat of the XR ecosystem—when they thrive, the whole industry thrives," said Joseph Lin, General Manager of VIVEPORT. "That's why we're introducing a generous 90 percent revenue share on purchases of apps and games on the VIVEPORT store for developers to accelerate their growth. By putting more resources directly into the hands of the creators, we're ensuring VIVEPORT is at the forefront of driving growth for the XR community."
HTC is now offering a big revenue boost for VR developers selling content on its VIVEPORT VR storefront, on both PC VR and its standalone Vive XR Elite headset. The company announced that the developer will now keep 90 per cent of the revenue from apps bought on the platform while the platform keeps only 10 per cent. The company hasn’t announced whether this is a permanent revenue sharing arrangement.
It’s a first of sorts. Other major XR app stores like Meta’s Quest store retain 30 per cent and pass on 70 per cent of revenue share to developers. HTC has announced that the new revenue split will kick in from April 1 to new apps sold on both the PC VR and Vive XR Elite versions of Viveport. In addition, players can already enjoy hundreds of premium titles on VIVEPORT that will retroactively benefit from the revenue share, including Blade & Sorcery, The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners, Fracked, After the Fall, and SUPERHOT.
VIVEPORT gives users unlimited access to a vast library of PCVR games.
VIVEPORT is also home to the first and only PCVR subscription plan, VIVEPORT Infinity, that gives users unlimited access to a vast library of PCVR games and applications for a monthly fee. VIVEPORT Infinity supports all major PCVR headsets, including Meta Quest 2 and Quest 3 via Link and VIVE XR Elite via VIVE Streaming. VIVEPORT has been HTC's store for XR games and apps since 2016. In 2020 HTC announced a limited period offer via a blogpost that gave developers suing VIVEPORT 100% of revenue at the end of 2020.
VR and mixed reality headsets have seen very limited consumer adoption in India where the HTC Vive and Meta headsets don’t have a significant market presence. There has been renewed interest and buzz in the category since Apple announced its Vision Pro headset.
