Narendra Modi is the 14th prime minister of India and represents Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi constituency in the Lok Sabha. Born and raised in Gujarat’s Vadnagar, he is a senior member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The 71-year-old political leader is also a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a country-based right-wing Hindu nationalist paramilitary volunteer organisation. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Modi led the saffron party’s political campaign as its prime ministerial face. In the polls, he fought from the Varanasi seat for the first time and won with a huge margin. The party also won the polls with a majority in the lower house of Parliament and Modi was appointed as the Prime Minister of the country. With this, he became the first PM of the country, who was born after its independence in 1947. He was re-elected in the 2019 general elections after BJP retained power in the Centre for the second consecutive term. Earlier, Modi had served as the Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014. In his tenure, he has taken several historic decisions, including ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’, abrogation of Article 370, demonetization, introduction of Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and passage of several other significant bills.
