India can play ‘unique role’ in ending Ukraine war, says US; renews call for PM Modi’s mediation

The United States has again signalled that it expects India to play a significant diplomatic role in ending the Russia-Ukraine war. Speaking on Thursday, US Congressman Ami Bera said, “India can play a big and unique role in helping end the Russia-Ukraine conflict,” adding that Washington believes “the road to peace runs through New Delhi.” His comments echo earlier remarks by White House trade adviser Peter Navarro, who also said that “the road to peace runs through New Delhi” while praising Indian leadership.

These expectations come even as the US continues to impose high tariffs on Indian goods, reflecting ongoing tension over New Delhi’s energy partnership with Moscow. The Indian government has repeatedly defended its decision to import Russian oil, calling it a matter of energy security. Officials say the policy is driven by market realities and the need to ensure affordable fuel for India’s 1.4 billion people.

India’s expanding diplomatic role

The renewed push from Washington adds to the growing global view that Prime Minister Narendra Modi now plays an essential role on the world stage. India’s approach of strategic autonomy has allowed it to maintain strong relationships with both the West and Russia. International leaders are now urging New Delhi to use this balanced position to support peace efforts.

During the 2025 India-Russia Summit, held after a gap of several years, Modi made India’s position clear to President Vladimir Putin. “India is not neutral” in the Ukraine war, Modi said, adding that “our side is peace.” The summit ended with both countries committing to stronger defence, energy, and trade ties under a long-term Vision 2030 plan.

Outreach to Ukraine

Modi has also strengthened ties with Ukraine. In August 2024, he became the first Indian prime minister to visit Kyiv. During talks with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Modi reaffirmed support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and said India stood “on the side of peace.” He also committed humanitarian aid and diplomatic support.

The two leaders met again in September 2024 in New York, where Zelenskyy thanked India for its “clear, consistent and constructive approach.” India continued this engagement in 2025 during a phone call between the two leaders. Modi said that “by virtue of our good relations with both sides … we can strengthen efforts dedicated to the restoration of an early and lasting peace.”

A diplomatic crossroads

As global pressure builds, India now finds itself in a unique position. The United States expects New Delhi to use its influence with Russia, while Ukraine welcomes India’s balanced and consistent support. How India navigates these expectations will shape its role in global diplomacy and could influence efforts to end the war.
