In a fresh salvo, Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh today criticised Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for "taking credit" for development of the state. "Gujarat was always ahead in terms of development and progress that is visible. It did not happen overnight", Singh said referring to Modi's claims of bringing a turnaround in Gujarat during his rule.

Singh was speaking to reporters before heading for a private tour of Tadoba tiger reserve in neighbouring Chandrapur district of east Maharashtra. Responding to a query on if Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi would be projected as the party's prime ministerial candidate in Lok Sabha elections next year, Singh evaded direct reply, saying "people of the country want Rahul Gandhi as the prime ministerial candidate".
Singh also took on the BJP leadership for inducting tainted former Gujarat minister of state for Home Amit Shah, an accused in the fake encounter cases, as the national general secretary in a new team announced by Rajnath Singh. On his Tadoba tour, Singh said he wanted to be in the company of nature to "burst stress".
