At least ten people were killed and 25 others injured in a shooting at a secondary school in the Canadian town of Tumbler Ridge on Wednesday, local media reported. Police confirmed that one suspect has been found dead, but have not disclosed further details.
Authorities said the situation was still unfolding and that information on the victims, motive and circumstances would be released once verified. In a statement, officers confirmed that several people were hurt and that investigations were continuing.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) confirmed they were responding to a “confirmed active shooter incident” at the school, located in the small northeastern B.C. community of Tumbler Ridge.
“As of 1:20 pm, the Tumbler Ridge RCMP are currently on scene of a confirmed active shooter incident at the Tumbler Ridge Secondary School,” police said in a news release, as quoted by local media.
RCMP later confirmed that there were multiple victims, though officials declined to specify how many people were injured or the severity of their injuries. In a text message to media, Staff Sgt. Kris Clark said there were “multiple victims,” stressing that information remained preliminary as officers continued to secure the area.
Police said one suspect had been found dead. Investigators were also working to determine whether a second suspect may have been involved in the incident.
An emergency alert issued shortly after 2 p.m. PT warned residents across a wide area, including nearby communities such as Chetwynd and Dawson Creek, to shelter in place. The alert initially described the suspect as “a female in a dress with brown hair,” according to local media reports. RCMP later said the “original suspect” was believed to be deceased.
“The situation remains fluid,” police said, adding that work was ongoing to confirm the total number of victims and assess whether any additional threats remained.
Residents were urged to stay indoors and avoid the area. “Those in the Tumbler Ridge area are asked to stay inside, lock your doors, and refrain from leaving your home or business at this time,” police said. “All others need to avoid the area and follow police directions and restrictions.”
Authorities said further updates would be released once details are verified.
