Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s recent meetings in New Delhi with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and other senior BJP leaders have intensified political activity in Uttar Pradesh, triggering fresh speculation over a cabinet expansion and a possible organisational reshuffle in the state unit of the party. While the meetings have officially been described as courtesy calls, their timing has added to the political buzz.
Sources said the chief minister’s meeting with Prime Minister Modi included discussions on the possible structure of the proposed cabinet expansion. It is learnt that deliberations on cabinet expansion and organisational changes had earlier taken place in the presence of BJP national organisation general secretary B L Santosh, and a report of those discussions was shared with the central leadership. In continuation of that process, the chief minister is believed to have presented his views during his meetings in Delhi with the prime minister, the home minister and the party’s national and working presidents.
The expansion of the Uttar Pradesh cabinet has been under consideration since the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, in which the BJP’s performance in the state fell short of expectations, with the party winning fewer seats than the opposition Samajwadi Party. The current Yogi Adityanath government has 54 ministers, including the chief minister, against the maximum permissible strength of 60. Political observers say this is likely to be the final cabinet expansion before the 2027 Assembly elections.
Political analyst R N Bajpayee said the timing of the exercise was politically significant. “After the Lok Sabha results, the BJP needs to correct regional and social imbalances and send a message of course correction ahead of the 2027 Assembly polls. A cabinet expansion allows the leadership to accommodate aspirational leaders, strengthen caste and regional representation, and improve coordination between the government and the organisation,” Bajpayee said.
With Assembly elections less than two years away, the BJP has already begun recalibrating its organisational strategy in the state. Last month, Maharajganj MP and Union minister Pankaj Chaudhary, an OBC leader, was appointed as the state BJP president. Outgoing state unit chief Bhupendra Chaudhary, who served as a cabinet minister during Yogi Adityanath’s first term, is considered a strong contender for a ministerial berth, according to party sources.
A senior BJP leader, however, sought to downplay speculation, saying discussions on cabinet expansion were yet to reach a final stage and would require several more rounds of deliberations. The leader said the chief minister’s meetings in Delhi were primarily focused on key government and policy-related issues and added that the visit was not pre-planned.
Six vacant berths
At present, six ministerial posts are vacant in the Yogi government. Sources indicated that six MLAs are likely to be inducted whenever the cabinet expansion takes place. There is speculation that several leaders from the OBC category may be accommodated as part of the exercise. Although no names have been officially confirmed, Bhupendra Chaudhary, Pooja Pal, Mahendra Singh and Mukesh Chaudhary are among those whose names are being discussed within party circles.
Restlessness among asspirants
The chief minister’s Delhi visit has heightened anticipation and anxiety among MLAs aspiring for ministerial positions. Several legislators are learnt to be camping in the national capital to press their claims. Sources said some of these leaders had earlier been eyeing the post of state BJP president but, after missing out, have now shifted their focus to securing a place in the cabinet.
The chief minister is also said to have shared suggestions regarding organisational changes following the appointment of the new state BJP president. A core committee meeting of senior government and party functionaries was recently held at the chief minister’s residence. While it was described as an introductory meeting for the newly appointed state president Pankaj Chaudhary, sources said broader issues related to coordination between the government and the party organisation were also discussed.
Political observers believe the coming weeks could be crucial, with key decisions expected to shape both the functioning of the Uttar Pradesh government and the BJP’s organisational strategy ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
