A 22-year-old Indian postgraduate student at the University of California, Berkeley has been missing since February 9, prompting a citywide search and intervention from Indian diplomatic authorities.

Saketh Sreenivasaiah, originally from Karnataka, was last seen near Lake Anza in the Berkeley Hills. Local police have described him as at risk and have appealed for public assistance.

The Consulate General of India in San Francisco said it is in touch with Sreenivasaiah’s family and local authorities to help locate him.

In a statement posted on social media, the consulate said it was “deeply concerned” about his disappearance and confirmed coordination with concerned agencies.

The Berkeley Police Department has launched a search focused on Lake Anza and surrounding areas, including Tilden Regional Park.

Authorities said Sreenivasaiah was last seen around one kilometre from campus. He was also reportedly spotted in the 1700 block of Dwight Way on February 10.

A backpack containing his passport and laptop was later found near a residence close to Tilden Regional Park, according to local reports.

Police described him as 6 feet 1 inch tall, weighing about 160 pounds (73 kg), with short black hair and brown eyes.

Sreenivasaiah is pursuing a master’s degree in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. He previously completed a Bachelor of Technology in Chemical Engineering from IIT Madras in 2025.

On his LinkedIn profile, he described his interest in deep-tech innovation in materials science and semiconductors.

His roommate, Baneet Singh, has sought help on social media, urging anyone with information to contact authorities.

Students, friends and local residents have mobilised online to share details and assist in the search. Authorities continue to request information from anyone who may have seen him in the Berkeley Hills area.

The investigation remains ongoing.
