Samajwadi Party leader Nawab Singh Yadav was arrested in Kannauj for allegedly attempting to rape a minor girl.
According to Kannauj SP, Amit Kumar Anand, the police received a call on 112 helpline number at around 1.30 pm. A girl alleged that she was had been stripped and an attempt of assault had been made on her.
“The girl was rescued and accused Nawab Singh Yadav was arrested in an objectionable condition. During questioning, the girl said that she arrived at the residence of Nawab Singh Yadav along with her paternal aunt. She was told that she had to be there for a job...Case was registered under sections of BNS and POCSO Act. The accused has been arrested and further investigation is underway. The girl is a minor and is around 15 years of age..." the SP told ANI.
During questioning, the girl revealed that she had accompanied her paternal aunt to Yadav's residence, having been told she was needed for a job there. A case was registered under sections of the BNS and POCSO Act.
"The girl is a minor, around 15 years of age," said Anand. The authorities have initiated legal proceedings against Yadav.
Who is Nawab Singh?
Nawab Singh Yadav is said to be a trusted aide of SP chief Akhilesh Yadav. He has also served as a representative for Dimple Yadav. Singh had recently shared a video wishing Akhilesh Yadav on his birthday, where he displayed old photographs with the SP chief. Yadav's arrest follows another recent case involving an SP leader in Ayodhya. When Akhilesh’s was UP CM, Nawab reportedly was called a "mini chief minister".
The Kannauj Lok Sabha constituency has been a stronghold of the Samajwadi Party (SP) since 1998. In the recently held Lok Sabha elections, Akhilesh won won the the seat , defeating his nearest rival and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Subrata Pathak by a margin of 1,70,000 votes.
