Priya Sachdeva Kapur, the widow of late businessman Sanjay Kapur, has now filed a criminal defamation case against Sanjay's sister Mandhira Kapur Smith.
Priya has alleged that certain statements that Mandhira gave on podcasts, social media and interviews with the media are an attempt to destroy his reputation.
The criminal defamation complaint has been filed before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, alleging that certain public remarks made against Priya Kapur contain false claims, insinuations and personal attacks presented as facts, despite the matters being sub judice. The complaint states that these statements have caused serious harm to her reputation.
Priya Kapur is being represented by senior advocate Maninder Singh, assisted by counsel Smriti Asmita. According to the complaint, content circulating in the public domain seeks to promote misleading narratives and unfounded allegations, with the intent to malign and harass her through public discourse instead of pursuing lawful remedies.
Appearing before the court, Maninder Singh submitted that the conduct in question clearly amounts to the offence of criminal defamation under the relevant legal provisions.
The matter was taken up at the Patiala House Courts in New Delhi, where the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate formally registered the complaint.
The defamation proceedings follow recent developments in connected cases. In an earlier matter, the court had sought a response from actor Karisma Kapoor on a plea filed by Priya Kapur seeking certified copies of divorce related court records concerning the late industrialist Sunjay Kapur.
In this context, Mandhira Kapur Smith made remarks to the media questioning Priya Kapur’s conduct and intentions. She stated that if her brother had wished to share certain information, he would have done so during the marriage, and also commented that divorce proceedings are confidential, particularly when children are involved.
Priya Kapur has alleged that these public statements form part of the defamatory material cited in her complaint and has approached the court through senior advocate Maninder Singh, seeking criminal action for the alleged damage to her reputation.
