Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday condoled the death of renowned sculptor Ram Vanji Sutar, the visionary artist behind some of India's most iconic landmarks including the Statue of Unity in Kevadia.

The sculptor died at his Noida residence on Thursday aged 100. Sutar, who was a gold medalist from JJ School of Art in Bombay, had been suffering from age-related illnesses. “It is with profound grief that we inform you of the passing of my father Shri Ram Vanji Sutar on December 17, midnight at our residence,” his son Anil Sutar said in a note on Thursday.

"Deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Ram Sutar Ji, a remarkable sculptor whose mastery gave India some of its most iconic landmarks, including the Statue of Unity in Kevadia. My heartfelt condolences to his family, admirers and all who were touched by his remarkable life and work. Om Shanti," PM Modi posted on X.

Speaking of his works, the Prime Minister said Sutar's works will always be admired as powerful expressions of India's history, culture and collective spirit. "He has immortalised national pride for generations to come. His works will keep inspiring artists and citizens alike," he added.

Celebrated for his mastery of bronze and realistic sculptures, Sutar is often compared to masters like Rodin and Michelangelo. Apart from the Statue of Unity, the world's tallest that stands 182 metres which honours Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Sutar was involved in other notable projects including the 600-foot Lord Ram Statue in Ayodhya and the 400-foot Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Statue in Mumbai.
