  • China claims it mediated global conflicts, including India-Pakistan tensions.

Pakistan has backed China’s claim that it mediated peace between India and Pakistan during their May 7-10 military conflict last year. This is despite New Delhi rejecting claims of third-party mediation.

Pakistan foreign office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi, addressing a press briefing on Thursday, said Chinese leaders were "in constant touch" with Pakistan's leadership and had also made "certain contacts with the Indian leadership in those three, four days in May, 6th to 10th, and maybe prior to that and after that", the Times of India reported.

"So, I think those contacts, which were characterised by a very positive diplomatic exchanges, they did constitute in bringing down temperatures and trying to bring peace and security in the region. So, I'm sure that the Chinese characterisation of mediation is correct," he said.

Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi on Tuesday (December 30) said “tensions between India and Pakistan” were among the list of hotspot issues “mediated” by China this year.

“This year, local wars and cross-border conflicts flared up more often than at any time since the end of WWII. Geopolitical turbulence continued to spread”, Wang said, speaking at the symposium on the “International Situation and China’s Foreign Relations” in Beijing.

"To build peace that lasts, we have taken an objective and just stance, and focused on addressing both symptoms and root causes," he added. "Following this Chinese approach to settling hotspot issues, we mediated in northern Myanmar, the Iranian nuclear issue, the tensions between Pakistan and India, the issues between Palestine and Israel, and the recent conflict between Cambodia and Thailand," he said.

India, meanwhile, has consistently dismissed claims of any third-party intervention even as US President Donald Trump has been consistently claiming credit for resolving the India-Pakistan conflict.

New Delhi has maintained that, inflicted by this heavy damage, Pakistan's director general of military operations (DGMO) called the Indian DGMO and both sides agreed to stop all firing and military action on land and in the air and sea with effect from May 10.

Islamabad’s remarks have sparked questions, marking the first time Pakistan has mentioned Beijing’s alleged involvement in brokering a pause in the four-day conflict with India. The timing is notable, given that Pakistan had earlier credited only US President Donald Trump for the halt in hostilities.

China's role in the May 7-10 Operation Sindoor came under serious scrutiny and criticism, especially the military assistance provided by Beijing to Islamabad. On the diplomatic front, China, on May 7, called on India and Pakistan to exercise restraint even while expressing regret over India's airstrikes.
