Jhelum flooding: Pakistan officials issue warning to residents after accusing India of releasing extra water

Pakistan has accused India of releasing extra water in Jhelum river causing sudden floods. Several media outlets in Pakistan reported the sudden surge in Jhelum water and blamed New Delhi for the action.

While India has not issued any statement on the issue so far, Pakistani officials are warning residents of not venturing in the river in spate.

A Geo TV news reporting citing SDMA Director Saeeq Qureshi said that the water level in Jhelum has gone up by three feet. The report also said that at this time of the year, melting ice also contributes to increased water in the river. District administration has warned public to not go in the Jhelum or nearby areas.

A media report by Pakistan’s ARY News claimed that India has released extra water from dam located in Jammu and Kashmir, which has resulted river’s level going up to 22,000 cusecs. The report also said that mosques located in Muzaffarabad were repeatedly making announcements to ensure that people don’t go near the river and remain in safe zone.

The reported flood has sparked massive panic among the residents with emergency services pressed into action. People are being requested to leave the area as soon as possible.

The reports of Jhelum flooding come days after India suspended the crucial Indus Waters Treaty in the wake of Pahalgam terror attack.

The water pact, which survived four wars between the two nations was signed in 1960.The World Bank was the additional signatory for the pact. The treaty seeks to distribute the water of the Indus river and its tributaries equitably between the two nations.
