IndiGo on Sunday announced the cancellation of its flight operations to Tbilisi in Georgia and Almaty in Kazakhstan, citing developments linked to the situation in Iran. The airline also said some of its international services may require refuelling stops in Doha on Monday.

In a post on X, IndiGo said flights scheduled for January 25 between Delhi and Tbilisi, and between Mumbai and Almaty, along with their return services, have been cancelled.

The move comes amid a sharp escalation in tensions between the United States and Iran following a violent crackdown on nationwide protests in Iran.

The unrest began on December 28 after Iran’s currency, the rial, suffered a steep fall in value. What initially started as economic protests quickly spread across the country, prompting a forceful response from authorities, as Iran’s political system does not permit public dissent.

US President Donald Trump warned Tehran of serious consequences if it continued killing protesters or carried out mass executions of those detained. While no fresh protests have been reported in recent days, Trump claimed Iran had halted executions of around 800 detained protesters, a claim rejected by Iran’s top prosecutor as “completely false”.

Despite this, Trump said military options remain open, warning that any future action would make last year’s US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites “look like peanuts”.

As tensions rise, the US Central Command said Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jets have begun operating in the Middle East, a deployment it said would enhance combat readiness and promote regional security and stability.
