India will celebrate its 77th Republic Day on January 26, 2026, marking the day the Indian Constitution came into force in 1950. This historic moment transformed India into a sovereign, democratic republic, completing its transition from colonial rule to self-governance.
Republic Day is a national holiday, celebrated with flag-hoisting ceremonies, patriotic programmes, cultural events and community gatherings across the country.
The roots of Republic Day lie in the Indian Independence Act of July 18, 1947, which ended British rule and empowered the Constituent Assembly to draft India’s Constitution.
While India attained Independence on August 15, 1947, the Constitution came into effect on January 26, 1950, replacing the Government of India Act (1935). This date was chosen to honour the Purna Swaraj declaration of 1930, symbolising complete self-rule and democratic aspirations.
The theme for Republic Day 2026 will commemorate 150 years of ‘Vande Mataram’, India’s national song. The theme celebrates the song’s historical role in the freedom movement and its enduring emotional significance.
