Himanta Sarma claims 'evidence' against Gaurav Gogoi's wife: 'Should disown her once Pak links exposed'

The Assam Chief Minister has also previously questioned Gogoi's visits to Pakistan nearly a decade ago.

Amid turmoil in Bangladesh and renewed security concerns for India on both its eastern and western fronts, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed he has "solid evidence" against the Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi's wife.

Speaking in an exclusive interview at News18's Rising Assam Conclave, Sarma alleged that Gogoi's wife, Elizabeth Coulburn, is working with cartels that help Pakistan.

He said he was making the claims with full responsibility. "This is a big issue. She works with the state of Pakistan. I have clear evidence," Sarma said at the event.

"With full responsibility, I am saying this," he added. He further claimed that Coulburn is "part of a cartel that helps Pakistan."

Doubling down on his remarks, Sarma said, "After I reveal everything, that gentleman (Gaurav Gogoi) should disown his wife."

The Chief Minister added that the same standard would apply to his own family. "If tomorrow my son is found to have links with Pakistan, I will disown him. If there is similar proof against me, I would ask my mother to disown me," he said.

Sarma has raised these allegations earlier as well. In September, he claimed that a Special Investigation Team (SIT), examining a Pakistan national and his alleged links to Gaurav Gogoi's wife, had uncovered what he described as "startling facts" indicating a wider conspiracy against India's sovereignty.

At the time, Sarma said the SIT had identified the role of a British national-who is married to an Indian Member of Parliament-in the alleged network linked to Pakistan national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh.

The Assam Chief Minister has also previously questioned Gogoi's visits to Pakistan nearly a decade ago. The BJP, meanwhile, has consistently targeted Gogoi over allegations of his wife's links to Pakistan's intelligence agency, the ISI.

Sources said the SIT has questioned Elizabeth Coulburn in connection with the case, along with at least nine other individuals.

The Assam government has indicated that once the SIT completes and submits its report, the case could be transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), citing its alleged links to a foreign country considered hostile to India.
