In a shocking incident, several gas-filled balloons exploded inside a building lift in Mumbai’s Goregaon. The incident, that took place on Monday night, was captured on CCTV camera.
Police said a 21-year-old student, identified as Himani Tapriya, suffered burns on her arm, neck and stomach due to the explosion, Times of India reported. The incident took place inside a building lift at Amol Tower in Goregaon (West).
The CCTV footage shows Tapriya entering the lift as a delivery man identified as Raju Kumar Mahato, 32, carrying balloons wrapped in a plastic bag for a birthday celebration, and another man also entered, the TOI report stated. The balloons burst moments later, leading to an explosion.
Amid the flames, the three occupants of the lift managed to escape, the CCTV showed. Mahato also suffered burn injuries during the incident.
Tapriya, a native of Surat, had come to visit her aunt when the incident took place.
Police have registered a case of negligence against the shop owner, TK Jaiswal, under Section 125 (negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and are investigating the nature of the gas used in the balloons.
“I had just arrived at the building from Surat and took the lift to go to my aunt’s flat when a person carrying around a dozen balloons entered the lift. Suddenly, the balloons in his hand exploded, causing serious injuries to my right arm, neck and stomach,” Tapriya said in her complaint, as per the TOI report.
Police said Tapriya’s condition was stable and that she was provided medical assistance immediately.
