A major rail mishap was narrowly avoided on Thursday after a passenger train collided with a truck at a railway crossing in Jharkhand. The train was travelling from Gonda in Uttar Pradesh to Asansol in West Bengal when the incident occurred shortly after it departed from Jasidih.
According to officials, the engine of the train hit a truck near the Navadih railway crossing. No casualties were reported in the collision. However, two motorcycles that were near the crossing were also struck and completely damaged.
Railway authorities were alerted immediately following the accident. Officials reached the site to assess the situation, begin an investigation and clear the tracks to restore rail movement.
The collision led to severe traffic disruption as the crossing is located on the Deoghar to Ranchi main road. The stretch is also the only route leading to AIIMS, causing long queues of vehicles on both sides of the road and significant inconvenience for commuters.
A passenger onboard the train described the sequence of events, saying, “Train pehle kaafi tez horn di aur uske baad ek zoradar jhatka laga aur phir train ruk gayi. Jab neeche utar kar dekha to truck se train ki takkar ho gayi thi” (The train first sounded a very loud horn, then there was a strong jolt and the train stopped. When we got down and checked, we saw that the train had collided with the truck).
Railway officials and police personnel later reached the spot and worked to ease the traffic congestion while continuing their probe into the incident.
Officials also noted that this was not the first accident at the Navadih crossing, with similar incidents reported at the same location in the past.
