‘Double standards’: Tejashwi Yadav slams NDA over mutton served at Bihar Assembly during Shrawan

In Modi ji’s cabinet, there are three such ministers from Bihar who consume 3 kilos of mutton daily even during Shrawan, but for show, they give long-winded lectures on Sanatan, says RJD leader.

Tejashwi Yadav earlier has drawn fire from the BJP for eating non-vegetarian food during holy months.

Mutton rogan josh served at the Bihar assembly has become a matter of controversy with the JDU-BJP and the opposition RJD locking horns over it.

RJD leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, Tejashwi Yadav, shared a video from an NDA meeting at the Assembly in Patna on Monday. The video shows a pot labelled "Mutton Rogan Josh" in the dining area. The Kashmiri delicacy was served on the second Monday of the Hindu month of Shrawan, considered sacred by a section of Hindus. Most Hindus avoid non-vegetarian food during this month.

He accused the NDA of adopting a "double standard" over meat consumption. “In Modi ji’s cabinet, there are three such ministers from Bihar who consume 3 kilos of mutton daily even during Shrawan, but for show, they give long-winded lectures on Sanatan. We have no objection to anyone’s food choices, but how selective Prime Minister ji is! He finds it pleasing that his party leaders eat mutton during Sawan, but when it comes to opposition leaders who abstain from non-vegetarian food during Sawan, he doesn’t hesitate to turn their eating habits into a national issue with the help of falsehoods,” he wrote on X.

In 2023, the BJP and its allies had slammed the RJD-Congress alliance over visuals of RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav hosting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for a mutton meal during the month of Shrawan.

What does BJP say?

The BJP reacted by saying that Tejashwi, being the leader of the opposition, should focus on the election looming large rather than watching who is eating what.

"Maybe the caterer also arranged for the mutton dish along with vegetarian food, but did Tejashwi only watch who ate the mutton?" state BJP spokesperson Manoj Sharma told Times of India. "Should he be watching the food counter or working for Bihar's development? Maybe the caterer served both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. What's the fuss?”

Last week, Union minister Rajiv Ranjan alias Lalan Singh triggered a similar row when he hosted a mutton party for his supporters in Lakhisarai, which is a part of his Munger Lok Sabha constituency.

In a video that went viral, Lalan is heard saying that he arranged both "vegetarian and non-vegetarian" foods.

Tejashwi again took a dig at Singh for hosting a mutton party during Shravan.

Earlier this month, Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor arranged "biryani" for all those who came to hear his speech in Kishanganj district. But the party claimed it was "vegetarian biryani" and not mutton.
