  • India to acquire six more Boeing P-8I Poseidon aircraft for Navy surveillance
  • P-8I Poseidon offers multi-mission capability including ASW, ISR, and rescue ops
  • Indian Navy currently operates 12 P-8I aircraft, marking 10 years of deployment

The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) on Thursday cleared the proposal to acquire six additional Boeing P-8I Poseidon from the US to bolster the Indian Navy’s surveillance and combat capabilities in the Indian Ocean Region.

The Boeing P-8I is a multi-mission, long-range maritime patrol aircraft designed for Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), Anti-Surface Warfare, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR), Maritime Domain Awareness, and search and rescue operations.

Despite the DAC giving the approval for six more Poseidons, the Indian Navy has reportedly pushed for the procurement of more Poseidons as they are able to monitor and secure vast oceanic territories and played a critical role of conducting surveillance along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) during the 2017 China–India border standoff.

One of the most advanced maritime aircrafts produced by Boeing Defence, Space & Security, the P-8I Poseidon is one of Boeing’s most advanced multi-purpose aircraft being flown by the Indian Navy, 12 of which are currently in operation. In September 2023, it completed 10 years of deployment with the Indian Navy and has already clocked more than 40,000 mishap-free flight hours.

Here are some of the features of Poseidon 8I (P8I) aircraft.

1.     Multi-mission capability: The Boeing P-8 Poseidon is a multi-mission maritime patrol aircraft capable of anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, maritime domain awareness, and search and rescue operations. They are a fit against the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) submarine patrols, which increasingly adopt longer endurance profiles and more complex deployment patterns.

2. Boeing claims that the P-8’s endurance and range allow it to conduct extended patrols over vast expanses of water, including conducting rigorous Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) patrols across the Indian Ocean and other key checkpoints.

3.  Technical specifications: The range of the aircraft is 1,200 nautical miles, with an additional four hours of loiter time on station. According to the manufacturers, it can reach a maximum speed of 907 km/h and is capable of operating at a ceiling of 12,496 metres.

4. Magnetic Anomaly Detector (MAD): The P-8I is equipped with a MAD system, which detects minute variations in the Earth’s magnetic field caused by the presence of submarines. This is particularly useful in ASW operations.

5. Electro-Optical/Infrared (EO/IR) Sensors: The aircraft features advanced EO/IR sensors for day and night surveillance, providing high-resolution imagery and real-time video.

6. Sonobuoys: The P-8I can deploy and monitor a range of sonobuoys, which are essential for detecting and tracking submarines. The aircraft’s onboard systems can process acoustic data from these sonobuoys to pinpoint the location of underwater threats.

7. Electronic Support Measures (ESM): These systems detect and analyse electronic emissions from surface ships and submarines, enhancing the aircraft’s ability to gather intelligence and track potential threats.

The P-8I Poseidon is designed to carry a variety of weapons and payloads, making it a versatile platform for maritime operations. Its armament includes:

Torpedoes: The aircraft is equipped with Mark 54 lightweight torpedoes, which are effective against submarines. These torpedoes can be launched from internal bomb bays or underwing pylons.

Harpoon anti-ship missiles: The P-8I can carry AGM-84L Harpoon Block II anti-ship missiles, which provide a powerful strike capability against surface vessels. These missiles have a range of over 120 kilometres and are equipped with advanced guidance systems.

Depth charges: The aircraft can deploy depth charges to target submarines operating at various depths.
