Bengaluru Metro commuters will have to pay more for their daily rides starting February 9, as the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has announced an annual fare revision across all distance slabs.

The fare hike follows recommendations of the Fare Fixation Committee (FFC) and is part of a new system aimed at avoiding sudden, steep increases in the future by introducing smaller, more predictable annual revisions.

Why are Metro fares increasing?

According to BMRCL, the revision is linked to a formula-based fare adjustment mechanism, tied to the Office Memorandum (OM) cost index, with a cap of 5% per year. The move comes after the extension of Metro lines and reorganisation of fare zones from 9 to 10, which earlier led to sharp fare jumps of up to 51.55%.

Officials said the new system ensures financial sustainability while keeping fare increases gradual and transparent.

How much more will commuters pay?

The hike ranges from Rs 1 to Rs 5 per journey, depending on distance.

Minimum fare: Rs 11 (up from Rs 10)

Maximum fare: Rs 95 (up from  Rs 90)

The Metro network now spans 96.10 km

Short-distance commuters travelling up to 2 km will see a Rs 1 increase, while longer journeys beyond 30 km will cost Rs 5 more.

Revised Metro fare slabs (from Feb 9)

0–2 km: Rs 11

2–4 km: Rs 21

4–6 km: Rs 32

6–8 km: Rs 42

8–10 km: Rs 53

10–15 km: Rs 63

15–20 km: Rs 74

20–25 km: Rs 84

25–30 km: Rs 90

Above 30 km: Rs 95

Discounts remain unchanged

Relief for regular commuters continues, as existing discounts remain intact:

Smart Card users: 5% discount

Students: 50% discount

Persons with disabilities: 50% discount

Senior citizens & national holidays: 10% discount

Pass prices revised

Season pass users will also see marginal changes:

One-day pass: Rs 300

Three-day pass: Rs 600

Five-day pass: Rs 800

What BMRCL says

BMRCL said the fare revision will help fund better maintenance, higher safety standards, improved punctuality, and upgraded passenger services, while ensuring the Metro’s long-term viability.

The corporation has urged commuters to stay informed and plan their travel budgets accordingly as the revised fares come into effect. The BMRCL had drawn flak from various quarters last year when it effected a steep hike in fares.
