In a significant move aimed at integrating traditional Indian medicine with modern healthcare, the Andhra Pradesh government has approved allowing qualified Ayurveda doctors to independently perform a range of surgical procedures.
Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare Minister Y Satya Kumar Yadav gave his approval to the proposal on December 23, in accordance with the Indian Medicine Central Council (Post Graduate Ayurveda Education) Amendment Regulations, 2020, and guidelines issued by the National Commission for Indian Systems of Medicine (NCISM).
Under the decision, Ayurveda practitioners who have completed postgraduate training in surgical disciplines will be authorised to carry out 58 surgical procedures — 39 under Shalya Tantra (general surgery) and 19 under Shalakya Tantra, covering ailments of the eye, ear, nose, throat, head and oro-dentistry.
“These regulations clearly state that postgraduate scholars must be trained to independently perform surgical procedures after completing their degrees,” an official said, adding that the move formalises existing national norms at the state level.
The approved procedures include treatment of infectious conditions, wound management and suturing, treatment for piles and anal fissures, excision of cysts and tumours, cataract-related surgeries, removal of accident-damaged tissue, musculoskeletal procedures, and skin grafting.
Speaking on the decision, Yadav said the government was committed to enabling trained practitioners to fully utilise their skills. “This step will strengthen the integration of India’s traditional systems of medicine with contemporary healthcare practices, while ensuring patient safety and quality treatment,” he said.
Following the approval, the Minister held discussions with AYUSH Department Director K Dinesh Kumar and senior officials to finalise the implementation roadmap. Andhra Pradesh currently has one government Ayurveda college at Vijayawada and two private colleges offering Ayurveda courses.
Directing officials to act swiftly, Yadav said, “Postgraduate courses in Shalya Tantra and Shalakya Tantra should be introduced immediately at the Dr NRS Government Ayurveda College in Vijayawada.” He also stressed the need for “fully equipped operation theatres and adequate surgical instruments” to maintain high academic and clinical standards.
As per officials, the initiative is expected to play a key role in bridging ancient Indian medical knowledge with modern surgical practices across the state.
