In Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur, a house has 233 residents, according to data from the draft special intensive revision (SIR) exercise. The listed residents belong to different communities, including Hindu, Muslim and Sikh families, NDTV reported.
A BJP councillor from the area said the clear mistake should have been corrected, adding that the discrepancy would lead to inconvenience for voters. Several families said maintaining accurate records is the Election Commission’s responsibility.
The draft voter roll clean-up list for the Nepal-bordering UP district was issued on January 6, with the names of 6.45 lakh people deleted. With this, the total electorate has come down to 30.2 lakh from 36.6 lakh.
The claims and objections window remains open till February 6.
In ward no. 16 of Gorakhpur, the draft voter list mentions 233 people living at one address, even as similar anomalies have surfaced in other wards.
A detailed review of the list reveals that 233 voters -- serial numbers 377 to 610 -- are all recorded under house no. 617, according to the NDTV report.
"If over 200 names from different communities are recorded as living in the same house, then it is possible that the names of people living in the entire locality may have been linked to this house," local councillor Rishi Mohan Verma was quoted in the report.
In an attempt to raise awareness about errors in the draft list, Verma has been going from door to door guiding people to file for corrections.
Some of the names that are part of the same house are Javed, Razzaq, Sudarshan Singh, Garima Singh, Mahfooz, Hashmi, and Shahnawaz.
Four residents -- Prashant Rathore, Chandra Kant, Shahnawaz and Jaiprakash -- said they correctly filled in their house number, address and other details and allowed officials to check the data before it was recorded.
Despite this, they claimed the errors were never fixed.
According to the councillor, there is no house numbered “617” in ward no. 16, and the entries appear to have been mixed up with records from other wards and even different assembly constituencies.
