University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided to extend the validity of MPhil in Clinical Psychology and MPhil in Psychiatric Social Work until the 2025-26 academic year. UGC Regulations, notified in November 2022, discontinued the MPhil programme following the recommendation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. However, the regulatory body has now relaxed the norms for specific periods.
“Considering the vital role played by Clinical Psychologists and Psychiatric Social Workers in delivering mental health services, the UGC has decided to extend the validity of M.Phil. in Clinical Psychology and M.Phil in Psychiatric Social Work till 2025-26 academic session only, in partial relaxation to the above Regulations,” the notice by UGC read.
Students can be admitted to an MPhil in Clinical Psychology and MPhil in Psychiatric Social Work programmes by Higher Educational Institutes (HEl) till the 2025-26 academic session only.

Earlier, the UGC directed universities to stop admissions to the MPhil programme for the 2023-24 academic year.
“It has come to the notice of the UGC that a few universities are inviting fresh applications for the MPhil (Master of Philosophy) programme. In this regard, it is to bring to the notice that the MPhil degree is not a recognised degree. The Regulation No 14 of the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of PhD Degree) Regulations 2022 clearly states that higher educational institutions shall not offer the MPhil programme,” read the notice.
