The long-held belief that artificial intelligence is synonymous with Nvidia’s GPUs is now being challenged, said Andrew Feldman, co-founder and CEO of AI chipmaker Cerebras, in an interview with Moneycontrol’s Chandra R Srikanth on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum 2026 in Davos.
“I think we’ve already seen Nvidia’s dominance being challenged. The GPU is not the only machine that can be used in AI. The mental moat for those who thought that AI equalled Nvidia has been crossed,” Feldman said.
He also cited Nvidia’s reported $20 billion acquisition of Groq as proof of this transition.
“Nvidia admitted they didn’t have a solution and spent $20 billion to buy the number two player. That shows there are things GPUs don’t do well,” he said.
In December of 2025, Nvidia Corp. agreed to a licensing deal with artificial intelligence startup Groq, furthering its investments in companies connected to the AI boom and gaining the right to add a new type of technology to its products.
The world’s largest publicly traded company has paid for the right to use Groq’s technology and will integrate its chip design into future products. Some of the startup’s executives are leaving to join Nvidia to help with that effort, the companies said. Groq will continue as an independent company with a new chief executive, it said Wednesday in a post on its website.
Feldman pointed to Google training its Gemini model on TPUs without using Nvidia hardware as a major shift in the industry.
“What we saw was the training of a foundation model entirely without Nvidia. That was a big moment,” he said.
Feldman said the market is now rapidly moving toward fast inference, the stage where AI is deployed in real-world applications. “Inference is where AI meets the real economy. That’s where coding, agentic work and deep research happen,” he said.
Founded in 2016, Cerebras Systems specialises in AI computing with its flagship product, the Wafer Scale Engine (WSE), the world’s largest AI accelerator. The company is positioning itself as a strong competitor to industry giants like NVIDIA by providing cutting-edge AI hardware solutions for enterprises and research institutions.
Asked whether Cerebras itself had received acquisition interest, Feldman replied, “We don’t kiss and tell. We’re gentlemen.”
On concerns of an AI bubble, Feldman dismissed the idea.
“This isn’t a bubble. This is how a new technology diffuses through an entire economy...People want AI to be faster. They don’t want to wait. Faster inference is what users care about most today,” he added.
