All of you know what aerosol cans are. Perfumes, deodorants, paints, lighter gas... aerosol cans are used for a lot of day-to-day work in the modern world. But how would it be if you found your cooking oil in such a can? Nah, not happening, you think? Wrong.

There’s a small company about 40 kms away from Vijaywada in Andhra Pradesh in South India that has developed the technology and been manufacturing aerosol cans containing cooking oil. The BR KuKing Spray looks like any other ordinary aerosol spray tin until your attention goes to the label.

All that you have to do is spray the oil on to your cooking surface and start cooking. No pouring of oil, no wastage, no overuse of oil. Cooking oil spray, a mechanism for dispensing formulated cooking oil in an aerosol form, helps in reducing the viscosity of oil, thus giving it non-stick properties.

According to the entrepreneur behind this venture, B Rami Reddy, a major portion of your monthly oil consumption is cut down by using his aerosol sprays. And it can be of great boon to those who have high cholesterol problems or others who are health conscious.

The opportunity

Reddy's eureka moment came when he was using such an aerosol can for some other purpose in the US where he was working about 7 years ago. When he approached a company making such cans, the price of the technology was too much for him, and the technology, too, was not suited for Indian oils. So he looked around.

Only when he was convinced that he could develop a similar technology himself and produce the spray in India, he set up his company in 2009, calling it the B R Cooking Sprays Pvt Ltd.(Kuking Spray) with a seed capital of 4 crore rupees which was raised through friends and family. He also received financial support from MSME (Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises).

Reddy’s venture was incubated at the Agri-Business Incubator (ABI) of the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (Icrisat), Hyderabad. Icrisat subsequently bought  stake in the company.

The man

Rami Reddy is a B. Tech in Chemical Engineering and M.Tech in Biotechnology. He was worked at such prestigious institutions as the Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA and HP in Bangalore.

The product

Each spray can has enough oil for 300 dosas or as many chapattis. It lasts about 750 sprays, says Reddy. Reddy’s company has the wherewithal to manufacture spray cans for any oil – sesame, rice bran; you name it, he can produce it. A 250 ml can costs Rs 150.

Each one second spray of oil has 7 calories and less than one gram of fat. On the other hand, a table spoon of oil has 122 calories and 13.6 grams of fat in it.

Production Capacity

BR Cooking Sprays currently has a plant which can manufacture 1 million cans per year. But this, according to Reddy, is barely 1% of the potential that the Indian market has to offer.  B.R. is the only company outside of the US, Canada and the United Kingdom to have the complete technology and manufacturing capacity to produce cooking sprays.

Revenue model

For now, B.R. Cooking Spray Pvt Ltd directly markets the sprays across Indian cities with a special focus in the southern cities. And a major chunk of their revenues is generated through Direct Sales. They do have a minor chunk coming in through exports and tchnology licensing. They also have an option for custom manufacturing for their clients who want bulk orders.
