India is now leading the world in the deployment of new communications technology, such as 6G, according to Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia.
He noted that earlier, India followed much of the world in terms of adoption and deployment of technology such as 3G and 4G, but also deployed 5G technology quicker than the rest of the world.
"India in many ways followed the world in mobile technology, whether it be GSM, 2G, 3G, or 4G. 5G was the first time in which technology was promulgated all over the world ... and India achieved the fastest rollout of 5G globally in 22 months, with Rs 4.5 lakh of capital expenditure ... Now, almost 35 percent of our market is on 5G," said Scindia at the News18 Rising Bharat Summit.
"We walked with the world on 5G. We intend to lead the world on 6G. That means when the standards for 6G are set ... India was never on the table earlier. It is for the first time with regard to 6G that the Prime Minister set the vision in 2023 with the Bharat 6G Alliance, a group of companies, scientists, entrepreneurs, researchers, and the whole value chain. We have grown from 15 members to 100 today, and we have alliances with platforms from 30 countries around the world, from UK, US, Brazil, African countries, and elsewhere. India is now sitting on the table where standards are being set for 6G," said Scindia.
On the Bharat 6G Alliance, Scindia noted that its proposal of "ubiquitous" connectivity to all users across the globe has been accepted has part of the 6G standards that are being set by bodies such as the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project).
