Personal loan scams: Traps borrowers keep falling into

When you’re in a hurry for money, it’s easy to believe the wrong person. That’s exactly what scammers count on.

  • Fraudsters exploit urgent loan needs with upfront fee scams and fake approvals
  • Instant loan apps may misuse personal data and threaten borrowers
  • Always verify lenders and avoid clicking suspicious links or sharing OTPs

If you’ve ever applied for a personal loan, you know the feeling. You need money quickly. Maybe there’s a medical bill. Maybe a payment is due. When someone calls and says, “Sir, your loan is approved,” it’s hard not to feel relieved.

That relief is what fraudsters exploit.

Here are the most common tricks going around, and how people usually get caught.

“Just pay this small fee first”

This is the classic one. You get a call or a WhatsApp message saying your loan has been approved. Everything is ready. You just need to pay a small processing charge, or GST, or “file activation” fee.

It sounds harmless. A few thousand rupees to unlock a bigger loan.

The moment you transfer the money, they vanish.

Real banks do not ask you to send fees to someone’s personal account before disbursal. They deduct charges from the loan amount. If someone insists on upfront payment into a random account, that’s your cue to walk away.

Instant loan apps that turn ugly later

Some apps promise money in minutes. Minimal paperwork. No credit score checks. Just upload your Aadhaar and PAN and get cash.

People try them when banks say no.

The problem starts later. These apps often take access to your contacts and photos. If you delay repayment or question the interest charged, they start threatening to call your family and friends.

Before downloading any app, check whether the lender is actually registered with the Reserve Bank of India. If you cannot clearly find the company name, address and registration details, don’t risk it.

“Guaranteed approval” no matter what

No bank guarantees approval without checking your income and credit history. So when someone says, “Don’t worry about your CIBIL score, sir, 100 percent approval,” it should raise questions.

If it sounds too easy, it usually is.

Fake bank websites and links

Another common trick is sending you a link that looks like a real bank website. You fill in your details, upload documents and share an OTP. That’s all they need.

It’s safer to type the bank’s website directly into your browser than to click links sent via SMS or email. And never share your OTP. Not with a “loan officer,” not with “customer care,” not with anyone.

A simple gut check

Scams often have one thing in common: urgency. “Do it now.” “Offer valid today only.” “Pay immediately.”

Real lenders don’t rush you like that.

If you’re applying for a personal loan, slow down. Verify the lender. Use official websites or known banking apps. If you’re unsure, call the bank’s official number from its website.

Needing money is stressful enough. Losing it to a scam makes it worse. A little suspicion and five extra minutes of checking can save you months of regret.
