The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched an updated Aadhaar mobile application that transforms the way users can authenticate their identity. With features such as Face ID verification and QR code scanning, the new app eliminates the need to carry physical Aadhaar cards for most verification processes.

Face ID for digital authentication

At the core of the new app is a facial recognition system. Users can now authenticate themselves simply by scanning their face through the app, which then matches the live image with biometric data stored in the Aadhaar database. This contactless approach enhances convenience while reducing risks related to physical document tampering or theft.

QR code for instant ID verification

The app also integrates Aadhaar’s QR code scanning feature, similar to how UPI transactions work. Users can verify their identity at airports, hotels, offices, and other checkpoints by scanning a QR code displayed at the verification point. This makes Aadhaar-based KYC and identity verification quicker and safer.

Focus on user privacy and control

UIDAI has assured users that the new app offers robust privacy protections. Individuals have full control over their data, which is shared only with their consent and only when required. The app’s architecture ensures that Aadhaar data cannot be altered, misused, or accessed without proper authorization.

How to download the new Aadhaar app

The app, titled "AadhaarFaceRD," is currently available on both Android and iOS platforms.

  • Android users can download it from the Google Play Store by searching for "Aadhaar Face RD."
  • iPhone users can find it on the App Store under the name "AadhaarFaceRD."

Users should note that this app works in tandem with Aadhaar Authentication User Agencies (AUAs) and KYC User Agencies (KUAs), which trigger the app when face-based verification is needed. To run the app smoothly, devices must meet minimum system requirements, including Android 9 or above, 4 GB RAM, a 13 MP camera, and sufficient storage space.

Limited release for now

As of now, the app is in its beta testing phase and has been released to a select group of users. UIDAI plans to roll it out to the general public soon, once the system is tested thoroughly and optimized for scale.

This innovation is part of UIDAI’s broader push to digitize identity services while prioritizing user convenience and data security. The Face ID-enabled Aadhaar app could soon become the standard for paperless, secure, and fast identity verification across India.

For those interested in a demo, UIDAI has also released a video guide to walk users through the new features.
