A report by Indian Space Association, Deloitte and NASSCOM on October 10 recommended the development of digital public infrastructure in the space sector to unlock value in the sector.
The report, "Exploring Opportunities for downstream spacetech" released on the second day of Indian Space Conclave, said that the DPI approach can generate value and help in and realise the aim of delivering “spacetech-as-a-service”.
The report recognises three core satellite commercial application areas – Remote Sensing/Earth Observation (EO), Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT), and Satellite Communication (SATCOM). Within these three areas, the report identifies more than 200 use cases.
For example, earth observation has found critical applications in agriculture; SATCOM-as-a-service can create multiple applications in areas such as in-flight and remote area connectivity etc. India's PNT programme, including NavIC, can assume a pivotal role in transportation, communication, and defence, the report said.
Sreeram Ananthasayanam, Partner, Deloitte said, “The downstream space sector has the potential to make a significant impact on India's economy and society."
Lt Gen Anil Kumar Bhatt, Director General, ISpA, "Space's rise as the fourth operational domain compels us to secure our space assets and access. This journey necessitates steadfast policies, global collaboration, and cutting-edge technology. Recognising space's multifaceted nature, we focus on advancing space tech, satellites, and situational awareness to enhance national security and readiness for the future."
