Adani Group and Brazilian aerospace major Embraer are set to announce plans next week to establish a final assembly line for civilian aircraft in India, marking a major step in the country’s push to manufacture planes domestically, news agency PTI reported, citing sources.

India is among the world’s fastest-growing civil aviation markets, with rising air traffic demand, rapid fleet expansion by airlines and a steady increase in the number of operational airports.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed between executives of Adani Defence and Aerospace and Embraer in the presence of Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu on January 27 in New Delhi. The agreement is expected to pave the way for setting up a Final Assembly Line (FAL) in India for Embraer’s civilian aircraft, sources said.

Embraer manufactures commercial jets with seating capacity of up to 150 passengers. The proposed FAL will mark Adani Group’s entry into aircraft manufacturing, expanding its footprint in India’s rapidly growing aviation ecosystem.

One of the sources said that, over time, Adani Group is also likely to begin manufacturing aircraft components once the assembly line becomes operational.

In a joint media invitation issued by the two companies for a briefing in the national capital on January 27, they said that “a historic development in India's commercial aviation ‘Make in India’ journey will be announced.”

Embraer has been stepping up its focus on the Indian market to tap into long-term growth opportunities. In October 2025, the Brazilian aircraft maker opened a new office in New Delhi.

The proposed venture with Adani Group is expected to give Embraer a significant boost in India’s civil aviation space, where it aims to offer cost-competitive regional jets.

Embraer’s E-Jets began operating in India in 2005, and the company currently has nearly 50 aircraft in the country. These serve the Indian Air Force, government agencies, business jet operators and regional airline Star Air.

According to Embraer, the Indian aviation market is expected to require at least 500 aircraft in the 80–146 seat segment over the next 20 years. The company highlighted this projection in a release issued on January 21.

In the defence segment, Embraer Defense & Security had, in 2024, signed an MoU with Mahindra Defence Systems to explore a joint bid for the Indian Air Force’s Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) programme using the C-390 Millennium platform.

Embraer is also looking to strengthen its presence across multiple aviation segments in India, including commercial aviation, defence, business jets, services and support, as well as urban air mobility.

Meanwhile, the government is working on measures to boost civilian aerospace manufacturing and maintenance activities in the country. In November 2025, French aerospace major Safran announced that its maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility for LEAP engines in India would become operational this year.
