India's largest passenger car maker Maruti Suzuki is planning to launch 2 new diesel models by 2014-end and it seems Japanese parent Suzuki is developing 2 engines in-house for India, to cash in on the increasing demand for diesel vehicles in the country.

Suzuki is developing a 1 litre and 1.4 litre diesel engine in Japan for the Indian market, CNBC-TV18 reported Monday quoting sources.

The 1.4 litre diesel engine car could be positioned above the compact DZire, currently one of the top selling cars from Maruti's stable.

Maruti currently sources 1.3 litre multi-jet turbo diesel engines from Italian car maker Fiat's Indian arm as per a deal struck in Jan 2012. According to the deal, Fiat India Automobiles is to supply one lakh 1.3 litre multi-jet diesel engines to Maruti for three years starting 2012.

Maruti itself is investing close to Rs 1,700 crore to set up a diesel engine plant at Gurgaon with capacity to produce three lakh units a year.

The company has seen strong demand for its diesel vehicles, mainly Swift hatchback, DZire sedan, and Ertiga multi-utililty vehicle, following a sharp rise in petrol prices in the last 1-1.5 years.

Maruti Suzuki shares were trading up 0.8 percent at Rs 1,536.50 on NSE in afternoon trade.
