Delhiites – get ready for a major hike in your electricity bills.

Three private distribution companies - Tata Delhi Power, BSES Rajdhani and BSES Yamuna, have received the go ahead from the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) to hike power tariffs.

“The increased tariff will be effective from July 1,” DERC Chairman PD Sudhakar announced at a press conference.

The steep hike in Delhi power tariffs will see domestic prices go up by 24% and commercial prices go up by 19.5%.

Additional charges of Fuel surcharge will put a further burden on the bills.

The DERC has said there won't be another hike in prices for the next two to three years.

Last year, the DERC allowed companies to raise tariff by 22% but it was not enough to cover the gap of Rs 6,000 crore spent by the three distribution utilities.

Price per unit till 200 unit will be Rs 3.70, price per unit from 200-400 units will be Rs 4.80 and price per unit for 400 units and above is Rs 6.40.

The power hikes in Delhi will be effective from July 1, 2012 and has been announced in almost all the categories including domestic and industrial.

An additional 8% surcharge will be levied on the overall electricity bill as well.
