Why whimsy is 2026's way of falling back in love with the gentle, the playful and the analogue

According to Merriam-Webster, whimsy is “the quality or state of being whimsical or fanciful” or “a fanciful or fantastic device, object, or creation.” In 2026, it’s also a gentle rebellion.

  • Whimsy is trending in 2026, focusing on balance and human connection.
  • Arts, crafts, and analog activities are replacing constant screen engagement.
  • The "house purse" and "analog bag" promote comfort and offline creativity.

After years of doom scrolling, over-optimising, and being constantly “on,” the internet has collectively decided it has had enough. The quietly poetic, delightfully impractical and deeply nostalgic, whimsy has emerged as the defining mood of 2026 — and it’s less about aesthetics and more about how we choose to live.

As global uncertainty continues to shape our digital habits, social media users are moving away from extremes and leaning into softer, more human goals. Searches for “whimsy” spiked at the start of the year, with people asking how to add more whimsy to their lives and setting what they’re calling “whimsy goals.”

Why whimsy, why now?

Whimsy isn’t about abandoning ambition or productivity. It’s about restoring balance. The nostalgia driving this trend is rooted in connection, or the search for real connection, where communication feels human-to-human rather than filtered through algorithms and screens. It’s a longing for slower rhythms, tactile experiences, and the small joys we forgot to notice while chasing efficiency. In a world obsessed with optimisation, AI and all-thing-machine whimsy gives permission to be playful again. And, it encourages you to do things simply because they feel good.

Ditch the digital hooks

One of the most visible expressions of whimsy is stepping away from constant screen engagement. Arts and crafts are having a moment and knitting, sewing, sketching, even scrapbooking is back in vogue. Reading physical books instead of audiobooks. Writing letters, not emails. These activities aren’t about productivity; they’re about presence.

There’s something grounding about creating something with your hands, about seeing progress stitch by stitch or page by page. It slows the mind and brings you back into your body, offering a break from endless notifications and updates.

The rise of the slow life

Whimsy aligns beautifully with the growing slow-life movement. It encourages taking intentional breaks, finding your own pace, and rejecting the pressure to constantly hustle. Whether it’s lingering over your morning coffee, taking a mid-day walk without tracking steps, or leaving pockets of your day unscheduled, whimsy thrives in unstructured time. It’s less about doing more and more about noticing things like sunlight through a window, a familiar song, the pleasure of being unhurried.

Build a house purse

One of the most charming sub-trends within the whimsy movement is the “house purse.” There’s no fixed rule here. For some, it’s stocked with snacks, lip balm, and a mini first-aid kit. For others, it holds a journal, planner, pens, or a favourite book. Most often, it’s a thoughtful mix of self-care essentials and stationery; basically things that make daily life feel softer and more intentional. The house purse becomes a personal toolkit for comfort, creativity, and calm.

Enter the analogue bag

Then there’s the analogue bag, which is a more deliberate response to screen fatigue. Designed to make offline activities more accessible, these bags are filled with tactile pleasures like crosswords, knitting projects, novels, sketchbooks, journals. They’ve become the unexpected accessory of the season. The idea is simple, the bag makes it easier to reach for something analogue instead of your phone.
