Renowned lifestyle coach and author Mel Robbins continues to share thought-provoking relationship advice with her audience. In a recent episode of the U Up? Podcast, she broke down the two fundamental aspects of building a healthy, lasting partnership.

Robbins later shared a clip from the discussion on her Instagram on March 30, captioning it: “If you want to create a healthy relationship, these are the two most important things you need to be focusing on.”

The importance of feeling at home in a relationship

According to Robbins, lasting love isn’t always about an instant spark. While some couples experience an immediate and intense connection, she pointed out that this only happens in about 11% of relationships. The majority—roughly 89%—develop over time through what she describes as a “slow burn.”

“What really matters in a relationship isn’t the initial excitement, attraction, or social status,” Robbins explained. “Over time, what becomes crucial is feeling completely at ease with your partner—being able to be yourself without worry. You shouldn’t feel pressured to always look perfect or hide your imperfections. A truly fulfilling relationship should feel like coming home.”

Accepting the little annoyances

Another key to a successful relationship, Robbins emphasised, is accepting that certain habits and quirks will never change.

“Nearly 70% of the things that irritate you about your partner will always be there,” she said. “Maybe they love watching golf all weekend. Maybe they snore. Perhaps they’re not as ambitious as you’d like them to be. And that’s okay. Research shows that even in the most loving relationships, there will always be things that annoy you. Loving someone deeply doesn’t mean you won’t have negative thoughts about them—it just means you choose to stay and work through those differences.”

Social media reactions

Robbins’ post quickly resonated with her followers, sparking conversations about the realities of love and commitment.

One commenter wrote: “People romanticize relationships so much that they forget you can love someone and still be annoyed by them. No relationship is perfect—it’s about working through imperfections, not pretending they don’t exist.”

Another added: “Love isn’t about sculpting someone into an ideal; it’s about accepting them as they are. True love isn’t fragile—it’s expansive, messy, and real.”

Robbins’ insights serve as a reminder that true connection isn’t about perfection, but about embracing the beauty in imperfection.
